Director Identification Numbers

From 1 November 2021, all company Directors must apply for a Director Identification Number (Director ID)

You can find all the details about the requirements at: Australian Business Registry Services ABRS Website

When to apply

Existing directors must apply before 30 November 2022

If you don’t meet your obligations there may be civil or criminal penalties and you may be issued with an infringement notice.

How to apply

You must apply for your own director ID.

Step 1 – Set up the myGovID app on your phone

You will need to set up the myGovID app. This is different to your myGov account.

myGovID is an app that you download to your phone. It is used to prove who you are when you login to government online services including myGov.

Step 2 – Gather your documents

You will need to have some information the ATO knows about you when you apply for your director ID:

– Your tax file number (TFN)

– Your residential address as held by the ATO

– Information from two documents to verify your identity.

Step 3 – Complete your application

Once you have a myGovID with a Standard or Strong identity strength, and information to verify your identity, you can log in and apply for your director ID. The application process should take less than 5 minutes.
